Indian youngsters Samarth Dwivedi, Honey Baisoya share first round lead at City Bank American Express Chittagong Open


Chittagong, March 29, 2017: Indian youngsters Samarth Dwivedi and Honey Baisoya shot scores of four-under-68 to share the first round lead at the inaugural City Bank American Express Chittagong Open as the PGTI made its debut at the pristine Bhatiary Golf & Country Club.

Bangladesh’s leading golfer Md Siddikur Rahman was one stroke behind in tied third along with Sri Lankan Anura Rohana and five Indians Anil Bajrang Mane, Harendra Gupta, Naman Dawar, Shankar Das and PGTI Order of Merit leader Shamim Khan.

Samarth Dwivedi, playing only his second season as a professional, got off to a disastrous start with bogeys on the first two holes where he missed chip-putts. The 24-year-old from Allahabad then regained his confidence with a 10-feet birdie conversion on the seventh.

Samarth followed up his first birdie with two more on the eighth and 10th, driving the green on the latter. Dwivedi then made some crucial par putts on the back-nine before his final flourish that saw him make birdies on the 16th, 17th and 18th.

Samarth said, “I’ve not had the ideal start to the season having missed the cut in three out of four events so far. But I feel I’m now driving better with my new driver which I began using last week. The new driver has added about 15 to 20 yards distance on my drives.

“I had a poor start today but the birdie on the seventh got my round going. I struggled with my hitting on the back-nine till the 16th but stayed on course with some good par saves from about six feet. I then struck it well on the last three holes and landed it within three feet on two occasions. That helped me end the day on a high.

“One needs to have confidence with the driver here since it’s a tight course. The greens are smaller in size than usual and reading the lines will be tricky. Whoever putts the best will win here.”

Honey Baisoya, the winner of the season’s opening event in Noida, also had a terrific start to the week. Delhi-based Baisoya mixed eight birdies with four bogeys to share the lead with Dwivedi.

Honey, a three-time winner on the PGTI, said, “It’s a good start considering we’re all playing here for the first time. I’m now looking to carry forward the momentum that was built after my win earlier this year. The aim is to be consistent this season.”

Mumbai’s premier golfer Anil Bajrang Mane, who enjoyed one of his best seasons on the PGTI last year thanks to a 40th place finish in the Order of Merit, sparkled with a 69 in round one. Armed with a new putter, Mane made some long conversions to end the first day in a strong position.

Local favourite Siddikur Rahman produced four birdies and a bogey to also take a share of third place.

Md Ripon was the next best Bangladeshi golfer in tied 10th with a score of 70. His round featured an eagle-two on the 10th, three birdies and three bogeys.

Among the other prominent names, Indians Khalin Joshi (71) and Udayan Mane (74) occupied tied 13th place and tied 41st place respectively. Md Zamal Hossain Mollah of Bangladesh fired a 77 to be tied 65th.

MASS ANTI-CORRUPTION RALLIES HIT RUSSIA

Moscow court has found opposition figure Alexei Navalny guilty of organizing an unauthorized rally in the center of the Russian capital at the weekend and fined him 20,000 rubles ($350), a TASS correspondent reports from the courtroom.
According to the police, about 500 people were detained in an unauthorized rally in the center of Moscow on March 26.
During the court hearing, Navalny blamed the Moscow government for detentions as it had not allowed the rally and had failed to offer an alternative venue within the timeframe established by law.
The rally’s organizers earlier rejected a proposal by the city’s authorities to hold the protest in Sokolniki Park in northeast Moscow or in the area of Maryino in the southeast of the Russian capital. As a result, opposition organizations held their action in the center of Moscow. The action was not agreed with the city’s authorities.
Navalny said in the court he was the organizer of the rally but called it lawful and consistent with a decision by Russia’s Constitutional Court.
“We turned to the Moscow government for the action’s approval. Under law, they were required to agree it within three days or offer an alternative place but this was not done. That is why, pursuant to a decision by the Constitutional Court, we had the right to hold the rally in the place we initially requested,” the opposition figure said.

Navalny’s lawyer Olga Mikhailova blamed the Moscow government for detaining the rally’s participants. “The Moscow authorities were required to agree within three days the place proposed by us or offer an alternative but we were denied the approval while they failed to offer a new place within three days,” Mikhailova said.
As the lawyer noted, the Moscow authorities proposed alternative places immediately before the action. “But it was already late,” she said, asking the court to drop administrative charges against Navalny.
Navalny was charged with an administrative offence under part 1, article 20.2.2. of Russia’s Code of Administrative Offenses (“Organizing Mass Simultaneous Presence and (or) Movement of Citizens in Public Places That Caused Violation of Public Order”). This article carries a maximum punishment in the form of an administrative arrest for 15 days. Under law, upon the presence of two decisions on administrative offences, law-enforcement bodies may ask a court to replace Navalny’s suspended sentence in the Yves Rocher embezzlement case with a real prison term.

Italy will push for greater US involvement in fostering stability in Libya when President Donald Trump and other world leaders meet in May, Italy’s deputy foreign minister said on Monday. Italy hosts the annual meeting of seven of the world’s biggest industrialized economies (G7) in the town of Taormina in Sicily on May 26-27. It will be Trump’s first scheduled trip to Europe. Deputy Foreign Minister Mario Giro said one of Italy’s foreign policy priorities was to build international support to unify Libya. “We hope – and at the G7 we will say it – that this issue interests also the US,” Giro said. Libya split into a patchwork of rival fiefdoms after a NATO-backed uprising led to the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

INDIA BEAT AUSTRALIA CLINCH SERIES

India beat Australia by 8 wickets in the Dharamsala Cricket Test and clinched the four Test series 2-1. India achieved the target of 106 runs for the loss of two wickets in their second innings on the fourth day of the 4th and final Test . This series between two titans of world cricket  was probably the most competitive series that India played at home in recent years with excellent performance from both the sides and  by the visitors performing at their best.
Lokesh Rahul was the highest scorer with 51 not out while Ajinkya Rahane remained unbeaten at 38. Earlier, India resumed their second innings’ play at the overnight score of 19 for no loss. With this victory, the hosts also regained the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
After securing a vital first innings lead of 32, India took a firm grip on the match by skittling out the visitors for a paltry 137 in their second innings. For the hosts, paceman Umesh Yadav, spinners R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets each, while Bhuvneswar kumar claimed one wicket.
Talented players has this to say after the game,Smith lauded India for their dominance despite Australia’s resolute show. “(It was a) magnificent series. One of the best I have been a part of. Credit to India, they are a fantastic cricket side, particularly in their backyard. If you give them a sniff, they will take that,” the Australian skipper said.
Smith too praised the hillside  HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, which was hosting a Test match for the first time.
“What an amazing ground. The wicket was a good one. Pace and bounce, that’s what we like. It suited spinners as well. If you are willing to bat time, you can get runs,” he said.

The pro-European GERB (Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria) has taken an early lead in the snap parliamentary elections in Bulgaria, gaining 33.18 percent of the vote with less than 17 percent of the ballots counted, Bulgaria’s electoral commission said Sunday. In second place, with 27.45 percent, came the Bulgarian Socialist Party. Its leader, Kornelia Ninova, has already conceded defeat to GERB, promising that her party will not be a part of a coalition. However, Ninova added she is ready to form a government if GERB, led by former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, fails to do so. Apart from two main parties, another three political entities managed to meet 4 percent threshold required to enter parliament, including the nationalist alliance United Patriots and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF), which represents Bulgaria’s Turkish minority. An official tally of the votes is expected to be released on Thursday.

Electronics firm Hitachi has announced that the group’s subsidiary in the nuclear fuel business will post a loss of about 590 million dollars for the fiscal year ending in March.
Hitachi and GE jointly created the firm to develop new technologies for uranium enrichment for nuclear power plants.Officials say after reviewing the value of the business, they were unable to forecast growth in the future.
Hitachi entered the business in 2007 expecting an increase in the construction of new nuclear plants.But the accident at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in 2011 has seen the nuclear power industry fall into a slump.

AADHAAR CARD CAN’T BE MADE MANDATORY FOR WELFARE SCHEMES: SC

Supreme Court today said that the Aadhaar card cannot be made mandatory by the government for extending the benefits of its welfare schemes to the people. The apex court, however, said the government cannot be stopped from using Aadhaar in other schemes like the opening of bank accounts.
The court said it will set up a seven-judge bench to hear the pleas challenging Aadhaar but right now it is not possible.
The apex court refused to give an early date to hear a petition on making the Aadhaar card mandatory, saying it would hear the case in due course of time.
Last week, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had said the Aadhaar card may become the only identity card in future, and will be mandatory for filing of Income Tax returns to curb tax evasion and frauds.
Replying to the debate on the Finance Bill in the Lok Sabha, Mr Jaitley said that Aadhaar may become the only card in future replacing all other types of identity cards such as Voter ID and PAN cards.

PROSECUTORS SEEKING ARREST WARRANT FOR PARK

South Korean media said, the  prosecutors have decided to request an arrest warrant for ex-President Park Geun-hye. South Korean prosecutors say they have asked a court to issue an arrest warrant for former President Park Geun-hye to get to the case. For this is the latest development in a corruption scandal that has gripped the country for months and saw Park booted from office.
South Korean media are reporting prosecutors want Park’s arrest over fears she would destroy evidence and given that other suspects have been arrested, they say it would be unfair not to arrest her.Park was questioned by prosecutors last week and is facing a number of charges.
She is suspected of accepting millions of dollars in bribes from conglomerates.
She is also accused of abuse of power and leaking classified information to her long-time friend Choi Soon-sil who is at the center of the scandal.

ISIS execute 3 civilians on charges of supporting police in North of Afghanistan

At least three civilians have been executed in northern Jawzjan province of Afghanistan by militants affiliated with the offshoot of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group. According to the local officials, the incident took place in the restive Darzab district and the victims were all ordinary civilians. Provincial police chief Abdul Hafiz Khashi confirmed the incident but rejected the allegations against the victims. He said the three civilians had no links or cooperation with any government or security institution as claimed by the ISIS loyalists.

General John Nicholson, US top commander in Afghanistan has requested for more troops to prevent the country from becoming a safe hideout for the Islamic State (IS), which is also known as Daesh terrorist group. He said that the US and Europe need to send 5,000 more forces to Afghanistan. “We cannot afford to walk away from Afghanistan,” Nicholson told The Sunday Times of London. “This is where the war against terrorism started on 9/11. Two militants were killed during the army-led operation inside the terror den at Atia Mahal in Sylhet yesterday, as the raid to take on the terrorists holed up there entered its third day, making it one of the longest anti-terror operations.   However, the operation codenamed “Operation Twilight” was far from over as more militants were believed to be still inside the five-storey apartment. The Para Commandos are taking time because of the high risk involved as the militants have planted a huge stash of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in the building, mostly on the ground floor and the staircase, the army said.

Efforts are being made to form yet another new political party. A former civil servant, Jigme Drukpa, from the Menbi-Tshenkar constituency of Lhuentse is coordinating the efforts. Jigme Drukpa said the party will be called the Druk Kuenphen Tshogpa (DKT). Jigme Dukpa said he will be the party’s interim president. He resigned in January from the civil service. He said he had been a chief administrative officer with the Ministry of Labour and Human Resources.

Police: Information says plans are being made to disrupt peace

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the Maldives Police Service have said that they have received information that there is a group of people planning to disrupt the peace and create conflict in the country. Speaking at a joint press conference by the Police and MNDF at the Iskandharu Koshi tonight, the Chief Superintendent of Police, Hamdhoon Rasheed said that they would not allow plans to vandalise homes and damage property.  Superintendent Hamdhoon said that the Police will work indifferently in the protection of the elected government and the people.

Punjab receiving lion’s share of new gas schemes

The government has approved 97 natural gas expansion schemes worth more than Rs37 billion on the recommendations of members of parliament, most of whom belong to the ruling party’s political base — Punjab. The 97 schemes were all approved after the Prime Minister recently relaxed a moratorium on the expansion of gas supply schemes in Punjab. Twenty schemes were either meant for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Sindh — where expansion schemes can be undertaken due to their higher shares in gas production — or were announced directly by the prime minister during his public meetings in certain constituencies.

Sri Lanka and India to conduct joint oceanographic survey

The Indian Navy and Sri Lanka Navy will be conducting a joint oceanographic survey off the Southern Coast of Sri Lanka from 30 March to 11 May 2017, the Indian High Commission in Colombo said today. The aim of the joint survey is to update all the navigational charts covering the southern Sri Lankan waters with the latest hydrographic data and to further cooperation between the two countries in the field of hydrography. An analysis of the investment circuits fueling the growth of the real estate corporate sector in India cannot ignore the role of the diaspora, as India has been the first receiver of remittances in the world for almost one decade. Purchasing land and a house “back home” are common goals for migrants, and the well-off segment has not been immune to the property fever that has caught India. The diaspora also comes to the fore when one examines the development of this sector from the demand side. There is ample empirical evidence of the major role given to the diaspora / Non Resident Indians’ customers by the corporate sector of real estate, especially in the residential segment for a long time (Nijman, 1999; King, 2004). Yet urban studies and diaspora/transnational studies are domains of research that have largely ignored each other in the Indian context, but for some historical insights (Blunt & Bonnerjee, 2013).
This presentation will examine to what extent the desire to attract this specific source of transnational capital has (re)shaped partially the Indian real estate corporate sector, with a perspective from the South Indian metros, especially Bangalore. Developers have had to develop original, country-specific strategies to tap this source of capital, which has structured a distinct transnational market. This has turned migrants into city-makers in return to a certain extent. Nevertheless, the dependency on a reserve of customers located abroad also exposes this ethnic niche to the indirect effects of multiple changing local / national / international contexts and regulations, which makes it a fickle segment of the otherwise already highly volatile real estate market. This presentation is based on material collected in Bangalore and in the UAE since 2014. It has been partly funded by the French National Agency for Reserach (ANR) as part of the research programme Finurbasie (Financing Urbanization in Asia).

Aurélie Varrel is a CNRS researcher in Geography. She has been with the Centre d’Etudes de l’Inde et de l’Asie du Sud at Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris since 2010. She is currently secunded to the French Institute of Pondicherry, in the Department of Social Sciences. She holds a PhD degree (Geography) from the University of Poitiers, France. In her research she brings together migration studies and urban studies, with the aim of articulating a socio-spatial understanding of the contemporary transformations of South Indian metropolitan cities, especially Bangalore and Chennai. At the French Institute she is working on various topics, with a special interest for the urban fabric in Tamil Nadu.
