Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is arriving in New Delhi this evening on a four-day visit to India. Co-operation in renewable energy, clean coal and bio-fuels will be high on the agenda of the visit.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold delegation-level talks with the visiting dignitary tomorrow, during which they will discuss the entire gamut of bilateral relations. A number of MoUs and agreements are also to be firmed up in the areas of Security, Environment, Sports, Science and Technology and Health.
A high-powered delegation from the education sector will be accompanying Mr Turnbull.
On Tuesday, the Australian leader will visit Mumbai where he will attend several events including an interaction with key business leaders and an energy round-table.
AIR correspondent reports that this will be the first visit of Malcolm Turnbull to India. Mr Turnbull and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have had substantive meetings on the margins of the G-20 in Antalya in 2015 and in Hangzhou in 2016.
India-Australia relations cover a very wide canvas- stretching from defence and security cooperation to environment, water management, sports, energy and education. Both sides see vast potential in economic and commercial engagement, and Australia has invested about 7 billion US Dollars in India.
There is an Indian community of nearly 4, 50,000 in Australia. India is the third largest source of immigrants for the country and around 46000 students are currently studying in Australia.

Australia’s High Commissioner to India, Ms Harinder Sidhu, has welcomed the announcement of the visit to India by the Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon. Malcolm Turnbull MP, from 9 to 12 April 2017.
The Prime Minister is visiting India at the invitation of Mr Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, and will cover the full breadth of the fast growing Australia-India relationship including education, trade and defence.
“India is one of Australia’s most important international priorities. Our relationship has expanded dramatically since we established a Strategic Partnership in 2009, followed by two-way Prime Ministerial visits in 2014. We are taking forward an active and ambitious agenda,” Ms Sidhu said.
In New Delhi, the Prime Minister will call on the President and Vice-President of India and meet with his counterpart, Mr Modi, to discuss areas in which the two countries can strengthen their collaboration. The two Prime Ministers last met on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in China in September 2016.
Coinciding with the Prime Minister’s visit, Australia’s Minister for Education and Training, Senator the Hon Simon Birmingham, is bringing one of the largest Australian delegations of skills providers and higher education representatives to visit India. Together with Mr Birmingham, the Prime Minister will address a dinner convened to celebrate Australia’s knowledge partnership with India.
The Prime Minister will then travel to Mumbai to engage with leading Indian CEOs and business people. These meetings will focus on growing two-way trade and investment.
