US and North Korea to exercise restraint
North Korea’s foreign minister has accused US President Donald Trump of declaring war on his country and said Pyongyang had the right to shoot down US bombers. Ri Yong-ho said this could apply even if the warplanes were not in North Korea’s airspace. Ri told reporters after addressing the UN General Assembly that the whole world should clearly remember it was the US who first declared war on North Korea.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders reacting on it said US has not declared any war on North Korea and the suggestion of that is absurd. The Pentagon warned Pyongyang to stop provocations. Meanwhile, a UN spokesman said such fiery talk could lead to fatal misunderstandings. Ri’s comments were a response to Mr Trump’s tweet that the North Korean leadership would not be around much longer if they continued their rhetoric.
South Korea has urged the United States to help dial down tensions with the North, after Pyongyang accused President Donald Trump of declaring war. South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha said in a speech in Washington yesterday that it is very likely that North Korea will conduct further provocations. He added, it is imperative that South Korea and the US together manage the situation in order to prevent further escalation of tensions or any kind of accidental military clashes which can quickly go out of control.
China today asked the US and North Korea to exercise restraint and avoid provoking each other, saying it is very concerned over their escalating war of words.
Tensions have dramatically risen on the Korean peninsula after North Korea early this month conducted its biggest nuclear test, which its state-run KCNA news agency described as a hydrogen bomb.
US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un have traded increasingly threatening and personal insults as Pyongyang races towards its goal of developing a nuclear-tipped missile capable of reaching the US.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang told a media briefing in Beijing that a way out can be found when the parties stop the provocative statements.
