Government is in talks with the Congress and other opposition parties for the smooth passage of Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriages) Bill 2017 in the Rajya Sabha.
Talking to reporters outside Parliament, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said the Bill is expected to be taken up in the Upper House today or tomorrow. He expressed hope that Congress, as it had not pressed amendments in the Lok Sabha, to support the bill in the same manner in the Rajya Sabha.
Minister of state for Parliamentary affairs Vijay Goel said the Tripple Talaq Bill is related to the women pride and dignity and it should not be connected to any religion. Last week, the Lok Sabha had passed the Bill by a voice vote rejecting some amendments moved by opposition members.
Although Congress had supported the Bill in the Lower House while objecting to some of the provisions, some opposition parties in the Rajya Sabha are demanding to send the legislation to the select committee.
The Bill aims at protecting the rights of married Muslim women and to prohibit divorce just by pronouncing talaq by their husbands and have penal provisions
